Each part has five subsections, or testlets. All testlets include 62-76 multiple-choice questions (MCQ) and 4-8 task-based simulations (TBS), which are case studies that examine real-world accounting competencies.

There are three written communication tasks in the BEC section. Each test taker is required to prepare a professional document on a specific business scenario for these tasks. Examinees cannot utilize their notes for test questions, although they can use authorized material for task-based simulations. These materials include tax code in the REG section, the Financial Accounting Standards Board's accounting standard codification in the FAR section, and parts of the AICPA professional standards in the AUD section.

Candidates can plan and finish the four sections in any sequence at a Prometric test center in one of the 55 U.S. jurisdictions or chosen overseas locations. Examinees complete various exam questions taken from a pool of test questions.
